In my class last year at Dunwoody Academy, I often felt embarrassed when raising my hand to answer a question. I didn’t want to feel too smart. A lot of the students would say I was acting white or being a nerd.
People seem to believe that only white kids sit in the front of the class, listen to every word the teacher says, and get outstanding grades. In all actuality, the ones who want to learn and succeed no matter what race are doing what the “white” kids are doing.
Peer pressure is very high in middle school and in high school. A lot of young black teens focus on fitting in with a certain crowd, whether it is gang-related or hanging out with the “cool” kids in general. The focus isn’t on school, getting an education, and going on to college to get an even better education.
