Deciding not to go

Prom has been a tradition for juniors and seniors in high school for years. Prom is a night for celebrating and having fun with some friends most likely for the last time.

But prom night is not always perfect for everyone. Some little things can turn what was supposed to be a perfect night into a disaster.

This year me and my girlfriend decided to not go to prom. It wasn’t an easy decision to make. We had to decide did all the good things about going to prom outweigh the bad things. We broke down our reasons for wanting to go and not wanting to go. Here’s how it went:

Paris: The main reason we’re not going to prom is because we can’t decide on which prom to go to.

Kendra: If we just went to my school (Brooklyn Center) that wouldn’t be fair and going to both would cost too much.

Paris: We would have to pay $240 altogether on tickets and $400 for the limo. We would also have to eat before or after prom which means we would spend another $60 at least.

Kendra: One of good things about prom is the feeling it brings. Going out to find a dress with your friends and getting your hair, nails and make-up done. If everything goes right you feel like a queen.

Paris: Another reason I wanted to go to prom this year is to take pictures with all my friends. Years from now we can look back at the time we had. But depending on what school you go to the music might not be your type, and it’s hard to dance to music you don’t like. Me going to Highland Park, which is for the most part a white school, there most likely is going to be more pop-rock music being played. I like more of a hip-hop and R&B kind.

Kendra: A lot of times some girls don’t have the money to buy the really expensive dresses, and you feel down when you hear your friends talk about how much their dresses cost. If you are one of those girls who has to wear a cheap dress to prom, people will know and might talk about you. You could rent or borrow a dress but at prom you want to feel on top. You want to go looking your best.

Last year when I went to prom money was an issue because I didn’t have a job. My mom was paying and prom was in the budget, so I wasn’t able to do all the things I wanted to do like get my hair done.

Paris: Being the only one out of all your friends not to go to prom is hard. But with not being sure I want to spend money, we just skipped prom this year. That will undoubtedly be the hardest day for me since high school. It will be hard watching all my friends go off to prom, something we all have been planning since freshman year.”

Kendra: Last year I just went with a friend and this year I would have gone with someone who
is very special to me.

After the prom, Paris’s epilogue: I must say that the night didn’t go as bad as I thought it would. I watched a few friends get ready to go off. During prom it was raining the whole time outside and I sleep best during the rain. I slept until prom was over, then went to a prom party. Going to the party made me feel like I was a part of prom because I don’t feel like I missed the whole prom nigh experience.
